Youth Apprenticeship Program
Program Summary and Description:
The ReCYCLEry NC is pleased to announce the launch of the Youth Apprenticeship Program (YAP), a mechanic-oriented skills training program geared toward workforce development and cultivation of youth leadership and is based on principles of transformative justice. While the primary goal is to learn bicycle mechanics, youth apprentices will also be exposed to the bicycle trade and industry-related skills, develop interpersonal-relationships, boundaries, consent, communication, teamwork, group problem solving, and community engagement.
Apprentices will receive a weekly stipend equivalent to Orange County, NC, living wage ($15.40/hr) and be expected to participate approximately 8 hours / week for the duration of the 4-week program. The YAP is expected to launch in Spring/Summer 2022.
Apprenticeship Opportunities:
● Learn the basics of bike mechanics
● Restorative justice lens
● Long term community-centered project
● Apprentices will participate in a ReCYCLEry YAP Graduation Ceremony and receive the ReCYCLEry Mechanic Certification upon program completion
Program Requirements:
● 18-24 years of age, priority is given to BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, Person of Color) nominees
● Be a resident of Chapel Hill or Carrboro, NC
● Commit to ~ 8 hours / week for the full program (dates pending apprentice availability)
● Adhere to ReCYCLEry principles, policies, and procedures and local COVID-19 guidelines
● demonstrate an enthusiasm for bicycles or being a mechanic
Nominations (Self-nominations are accepted): To nominate a Youth Apprentice for participation in the program, send a Letter of Reference (1 page max) to [email protected] by April 1, 2022. Please address the following in your nomination letter: 1) general reasons for nomination, 2) relevant background, 3) interest, enthusiasm or experience with bicycles* (mechanical experience is not required). All nominated applicants will be interviewed for participation in the YAP. Accepted applicants will be contacted by April 30, 2022.
